06 V-max Vs. 07 V-max???
Hey Guys,
I've been tossing around the idea of picking up a used V-Max. I like the new body style, but I am really interested in knowing which model is going to be faster. I live in New England so I will be forced to buy a 4x4. I would also like to get a crew cab. I know the 06 will have 4.10's, but not all of the new models do (z-71 has 3.73's). I also know the PCM is MUCH more restrictive from the factory in the newer models, so I'm more interested in comparing them with similar mods.
I would definitely buy the following:
1) EFI live tuning
2) CAI
3) Cat back exhaust
I would also be interested in a possible cam/torque converter upgrade with LT headers. Nothing major with the cam, but enough to give it a little extra kick (maybe a little more aggressive than the lingenfelter GT2-3, and a possible 2600ish TC), I would like to hear it at idle. How does the L76 react to cam swaps with the AFM?
So... with those mods, what could I expect from both trucks as far as 1/4 mile times? How much better is the gas mileage in the newer models? If I did get into cam and torque converter upgrades would the newer model be left in the dust?
I am also curious in the weight difference between the 2 models (ball park). I saw some stuff on C&D that had the SSS at 5240#'s and the NBS 4x4 crew V-Max at 5580. Are those figures accurate? I figure comparing a crew to a crew that might mean there is a 200 lb difference... nothing to lose sleep over.
I have seen AWD SSS and 06 4x4 V-Max post low 14's (one broke into 13's on a cold night) with those listed bolt on mods, are the newer models just as capable? Ideally I would like to have a crew 4x4 running in the 13's without getting too crazy.
Now for more on the GEN IV... whats the story with the L76 intake, is it the same as whats used in the G8, or does the truck have a different manifold? If it is different, which is better? How easy is it to swap to L92 heads? Will the same headers bolt to the L76 and the L92, or do they require a different exhaust?
Thanks,
Rob Nap

07 vmax has the L76, (the 2500HD has a LY6)it is a 90mm intake. the LT headers are gonna be costly for the NNBS 4x4. dont worry with the tune Wheatly, Nelsons Performance, Blackbear, an so forth can easly wake that bus up.
as listed:
CAI
Custom Tune
Catback exhaust (or you can just pick up a magnaflow muffler for a lot cheaper than a catback system IMO)
the 07 will be a more powerful motor vs the 06 Vmax bc the 06 is going to have a smaller intake.

The 06 and 07 classic V-max has a heaveir duty axle as well, I believe 9.5" rather than the regular 10 bolt in the rest of the half tons. Isnt that basically the same axle thats in the 2007.5 V-Max?
I like the sounds of a 90mm intake on the L76, and the fact that the newer motor has "more potential" is very promising to me. So the intake is in fact the same as the G8?
I have come across that thread above once before. He has bigger tires on there and a 3200 converter, I wonder what the net affect of those come out to be? Probably just a little faster than stock on both ends.
Keep the answers coming guys... this is really helpful.

Jerry, is your truck 2wd? It looks like you have some low profile tires on those wheels. What gears do you have?
