Default Whining

Hey all,

I have a 1993 Chevy 2500, 350 TBI, 5 speed and I just got it on the road. In 1st, 2nd and a little bit of 3rd I get a loud whining noise. It like a whine in the trans and not the rear end. It doesnt do it while slowing down with the clutch out or when the clutch is depressed or in 4th or 5th at all. Its pretty loud. I was just wondering how much of a whine a manual tranny should have? I've never owned a truck with a 5 speed. Thanks a bunch.

If I had to guess I would say it may have a bearing going bad near the fron of the trans. Most likely the pocket bearing between the input and output of the trans. Could also be a different bearing, possibly input, cluster, etc. I would say the throw out bearing, but that wouldnt change with gear selection.
They usually dont have a lot of noticeable noise. You could try a fluid change and see if that helps, it may have the wrong stuff in there.

It sounds like you have a front input bearing going out.
