I thought that todays GM vehicles and others kept a "mileage" in the ECM/BCM that records the mileage also, so that people can't do "mileage fraud"? If that is the case you have proof of what mileage is on there. I mean if your odometer for some reason stops working, you have to drive it to the shop to get fixed. Aren't they going to hook it up to the computer to find out the mileage that is currently on it before they go reprogram a new odometer/cluster if that is what went out? I mean the mileage has to be somewhere else in the truck than just in the gauge cluster. If that was the case there would be mileage fraud all over. I could just disconnect my cluster if going on a long trip and drive with my GPS for speed. Then reconnect it later after I log on xxxxxxx miles. That just doesn't sound right? (And NO I don't do that to my truck, I am proud of the mileage that I have put on her and can't wait for her to keep going to 200000 miles and still be just as strong as the day I got it!)

Now, as far as the mileage fraud goes. If you removed your stock cluster, and wrote down the mileage from that cluster in front of a notary and the notary stamped that piece of paper with the old clusters mileage on it. Then you installed the new cluster with 0 miles on it. Then you just add that to the old number. As long as there is a piece of legal documentation with the truck, then there can be no fraud. And I think it would only be considered fraud, is if he tried to sell it or bring it in for warranty work and did not show that notorized piece of paper or the paperwork on the date and mileage that the swap of the cluster occured.

I can understand about the dealer not wanting to do it. But the reason behind the warranty work has nothing to do with the guage cluster. The original poster is not selling his truck, or even hiding the fact that it is a new cluster with xxxxxx miles on it "plus" whatever is on there now. That should be sufficiant enough for the shop to do the work? At least in my eyes. I mean the original poster stated that he told the shop that the cluster was swapped at xxxxx miles and the new cluster is in addition to it. I don't see a problem.

I am not bashing GM service or any GM shop. I just find it funny that this is an issue with a shop. They could have helped you out, they just don't want to.

The milage in full size trucks is ONLY kept in the cluster.

The correct milage is an issue with any shop for it could be over on miles and be out of warranty.

Thanks and have a great day,

Don

So TW.
I get the part where if you install it and show up they would be reluctant to flash the mileage but if you buy a used one and go to the dealer and have them install it, they still won't flash it?
And on the part where if the cluster goes out all together, How would they flash new mileage onto a new cluster if they don't know what it is?

Curious because I'll eventually do a swap.
