Default Topped my tank off too much.... help

haha, just kidding.

My gauge seems to be broken. The problem is that my needle does not reset when i turn the truck off so that when i turn it back on the amount of gas in the tank is added from the spot the needle stopped at. this was right after i filled her up so as you can see it reads two full tanks. only wish the reading was correct.

so whats the issue? the gauge? the sending unit?

any help would be great.

Yep you will have to drop the tank or unbolt the bed. I'm not sure how hard it is on these trucks I have done in on a 1997 GMC Jimmy and it really wasn't too bad. If the have the ability to unbolt the bed and lift it up I hear sometimes that is easier, but I have never personally done it. Check this auction out for the part you need you can use the part number from it to check around for prices, but think this is probably the best deal you will find.

I'm going to have to disagree with everyone thats posted so far, and say its the gauge. Reasoning, before I put in my new sending unit I was trying to make sure that it was the problem so I did the following. Shorted the sending unit wires(read empty) and also put a 250ohm resistor between the sending unit wires(pegged full) and when nothing was attached the gauge would just read empty. Durring all of this, never did the needle fall off the scale like yours.

Dropping the tank is 2 bolts. just make sure you run it empty. My 05 has a check valve in the filler neck which keeps you from siphoing it but unhooking the feed line and jumpering the fuel pump relay and you can empty it quick. Pulling the bed takes 2-4 people and dropping and empty tank takes 1.
I'm leaning on it being the gauge as well. The sending unit sends out a max and min which equals E and F. If it is something different then the gauge is most likely bad. Get a new gauge cluster. It will zero out your mileage as well.

it wouldnt surprise me if this is correct....chevy has had nothing but issues with thos whole cluster...ive have gone through 2, the company i work for has 35+ chevy and GMS pickups and most, not all have had the instrument cluster replaced b/c they quit working. NOw this is the first on that i have heard were the fuel gauge went first...Mine i lost the speedo, the rpm and then the fuel....something to think about...
