Default Time for new tires - Questions inside.

Time has come for new tires on my truck. I am running a 255/70-16. I recall hearing some very good things about the Firestone Indy 500's in that size and I would think they are putting out a quality tire now that they have to win back some customers.
I have been pleased with my General Ameritracs, but have always thought there was something better out there. The goofs at work keep suggesting a michelin tire. I was thinking about keeping it under 100 per tire as I am in college and paychecks are small and come every two weeks.
I will be using these in mostly dry weather, with the winter rain that california's bay area puts out. Maybe some skiing trips to the mountains 5-6 times a year tops. Also in the light and infrequent snow we get here in Prescott, AZ.

Here are some prices I have found online from discount tire direct.com and tire rack.com. I still have to see what Sears can offer me with my employee discount included.

Firestone Indy 500 - $73
Dunlop Radial Rover A/T - $93
General AmeriTrac - $90
Goodyear Wrangler RT/S - $88
Yokohama Geolander H/T- $87
Bridgestone Dueler - $87

Anyone have any experience with these tires? Or could you recommend a brand please? Are Toyo Proxes really worth the extra $35 a pop?

Thanks.

I can't really comment on the other tires but I will say that I've been very pleased with both sets of Toyo Proxes that I've had. The 20's before and now the 18's. The wear characteristics are great and have a long tread life with great traction. They ride nice and don't have much road noise. Plus they kick *** in water. If I were looking for another set of street performance tires, I'd most definitely go with Toyos again. Although I wouldn't really recommend them in snowy climates but they might be ok for an occasional trip through the snow. As long as it's not too deep.

Thanks.
I'd probably use chains for the snow trips anyway, just for extra insurance.

Other ideas?

Chains are awesome in snow! They won't let us use them here in Michigan.

in that size, i'd recomend the bf goodrich long trail t/a. we put them on my buddies 01' rcsb 2wd with 4.8 m5 and he's more than happy with them. if your looking for a decent all around tire for that model truck, that tire works great.

i would suggest stayin away from the geolanders. for the 1st few thousand miles they were great, but the traction went away quick with more miles....i also BARLEY got 30k out of them.
im now running 275/70/16 toyo proxes
these tires are GREAT, excelent traction in both wet and dry. i have about 10k on them i think and still have lots of tread left. i got these for $400 mounted and balanced
