A temporary fix for the intermediate shaft can be done by popping the hood, unbolting it from the lower steering shaft, and pumping it in and out (to re-grease it) 5-10 times.

It worked for me, don't know for how long though, I have heard a couple thousand miles or more. Hope this helps!

What is the typical cost for parts and labor to get one of these "new design" intermediate steering shafts installed at the stealership?

Over the counter, the parts will run about $97.00 and labor is about $35 to $50 at damn near any GM Dealer. But it's not so hard as you canm;t do it yourself.

Torq, I had this done @ apx. 35800 mi, I now have 47400 miles. Will GM warranty since they already did it? The day I did it, was the last day they'd grease I/S/S.; serv. writer said new fix is slide back & forth. I think 6-10x.
I think it's rearing its' ugly head again. While I haven't called dealer,...YET, do u think the 2/4 drop I did last fall speeds up the demise(thumps earlier than no drop). They greased it just months before. Crappy Michigan winter pothole-ridden roads ain't doing me any favors either.

It was just b4 the 36k mile mark. Now, who knows? I didn't get extended warranty. But maybe they'll cover this since they gave me the old fix & it came back w/in a year. If they wouldn't do new I/S/S(both labor/new part under warr.), I'd settle for them cutting me a deal on new part.

See the temporary fix at post #68 of this thread. It will take care of the knock until you can get it fixed (hopefully under warranty)

Fastnblu, your local dealer might be able to warranty it under a parts warranty, but only if it's been under a year and under 12,000 miles. Other than that, if you have a good relationship with them, they could do a GM Goodwill Warranty. You may ask them about a Goodwill. You can also call the GM number in the back of your owners manual, and make a complaint about the problem, ask them if they can help. Sometimes, GM will offer you a 50-50, which is, they pay 50% and you pay 50% of the bill. Other times they may offer you a deal that they pay the labor if you buy the pary or vice versa. I don't hurt to ask them.

Ifunz71, you should deffinately be covered under your remaining bumber to bumper warranty.
