My 2000 makes a popping sound that i can hear and feel in the steerling wheel, but it is only after the vehicle sits for a while. And it only does it once as i get ready to pull away from curb (my first initial turn of he wheel). Could this be the same thing with the steering shaft?

I was in a front end accident with the truck about a year ago and it started after that. I have replaced the tie-rods and the upper/lower ball joints.

I also have a creek/pop on the right side of the truck when i turn right into driveways. Could this be the crossmember as well?

Two birds with one stone would be great from this thread!!!!

Thanks,

Matt

Sounds like the Crossmember to me my friend. Check the torque on those bolts and make sure they're tight. Post up and let me know if this was correct.

Hey Torque_Wrench

Thanks for all the info on this. My 2WD 06 ECSB Vortec Max has a recirculating ball type steering box. Lately I'm getting road vibration and other vibrations that I can feel in the steering wheel. No noise but I can even feel the slight thunk when the A/C compressor engages. Does the steering shaft issue have different symptoms with this type of steering box versus the rack and pinion type? Hell I can run over a dime and can tell you if it was heads or tails! I don't remember the steering being like this before. Thanks for the help.
Jim

Tq Wrench, Great Info Brother!

Anyhow, just picked up a low mileage one owner 03 Avalanche, and this was one of two problems my uncle described when he went to test drive it. I will take it in to my local dealership once i get home.

The second problem was with a seal in the bed area letting water into the bed. Has something to do with the fold down part and removeable glass. Ever hear of anything like this?

Hey Brother! Always good to see anothe rBrother Mason on here!!!

As of your leak....yeah that's a pretty common thing with the Avalanche. They all seem to leak at the corners of the bulk head eventually. All you can do is reall keep it lubed with a all weater grease or some silicone.

The thumping is deff. the steering shaft. Your local dealer can fix it but you'll probably look at $100.00 for the shaft.

Contact me if you need me to help you out with this.

Always....keep looking for the Widow's son!

GMJim,

This problem seems to be common to each and every steering box, not just one in particular. Basically, the shaft makes a good harmonic vibration antenna, like a tuniong fork. Each vibration will be picked up and amplified by the shaft.

To Arkansas is about $12.00 by UPS

So far we've had no comnebacks on the new design here at my shop either. Keep in mind we do about 7 to 12 a week here also. So, it seems that GM has got it right......for now.

AK is actually Alaska, but Im leaving here in less than a week so Id need it shipped to TX. Ive heard on other forums mixed emotions about the new fix and a lot of people are having problems with it. just wondering if that was common or not
