Default Steering box ratio

Hey all. I was wondering if anyone knew the factory steering ratio for a 2000 Silverado? I was driving today through some twists and turns and it occurred to me that I think I’d enjoy a quicker ratio box. Which brings me to my next question. Is there a vehicle I can source a fast ratio steering box off of to swap on my truck?

See post #15 and #16 for details. https://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...ng-box-408225/

I was unable to get any other info from him and been a while since I looked in the junkyard for one...

I have not found the 83 box mentioned in that thread.

When I had my 2004 Yukon I swear the steering was quicker than in my current 2003 Sierra. This actually annoys me somewhat. At first I thought it could be the longer WB but I am not sure of this.

Did some quick sleuthing online through rock auto and found these two groups of parts for the trucks. The boxes for the Yukon Denali are listed at 3 lock to lock. The boxes for the Sierra Denali are listed at 4 turns lock to lock. I might order one and just switch. See what it does. IF it will fit. Those Yukon Denalis have hydro boost so maybe the steering box is different. There are a lot of different boxes here so are they different efforts of steering? Are they slightly different ratios? I don't know -- yet. One other serious thought if if you change boxes and your vehicle is equipped with stabilitrak, traction control, etc that could mess things up as the steering sensor would be off? I don't believe my vehicle has either of those but it does have quad steer so it could mess up the q steer system or at least cause it to be off in calibration.

So I also confirmed in the official GM specs that all of the trucks of this vintage seem to have 14.2 steering ratio and the SUVs have 16 for the steering ratio.

Does anyone know of the trucks turn the wheels further than the SUVs? I think that is a stupid question but I will ask anyways. It should turn the wheels the same amount but less turn of the steering wheel for the quicker ratio.

Still have no idea if putting the quicker ratio in my truck will significantly affect the Quadrasteer system. If a reprogram or recal will be needed.

I don't remember the exact part number but when I called redhead steering to get a custom box for my RCSB they speced me a box from a 2500HD and ported it to still be 3 turns lock to lock but much easier effort. Its night and day differences than the Tahoe! Steering is effortless and predictable. Makes it feel more like a sports car.

This is a guess, and my quadrasteer info is hazy, but if I recall correctly, the unit measures how much the steering wheel has turned independently of the steering box. There’s a collar that goes around the steering shaft under the dash that measures how much you’ve turned the wheel. If that is correct, then as long as you’re not turning the wheel faster than the thing can keep track of (which seems unlikely) you should be fine.

thanks for the info everyone. If someone does swap to a faster ratio box, I’d love to hear the results. I’m lowered and AWD. I think it’d really help.

Any chance it would have to do with the SUVs having more weight up top, being top heavier, and not wanting them to turn as fast to help avoid rollovers?

The front wheels on both should turn to the same angle. The wheels are stopped from turning when the spindle hits the control arm, and that I'm aware of the trucks and SUV's use the same spindles and control arms.

So it looks like there is actually a specific 4 wheel steering box and that box is 4 turns lock to lock which tells much why I feel I am turning the wheel more than the one in my old Yukon. I tried turning the nut on the adjuster plate on the box out in my truck. I turned it until most of the play in my steering was gone. I had almost 2 inches beforehand. It says online not to adjust the box or to only turn it a 1/8 turn. I turned it way past that. LOL. But if I ruin the box I don't care --- I was going to get another one anyways. I still want to replace the box but it would be nicer during summer instead of 15F wind chill.

I looked up the boxes on AC DELCO's site and got no information. On the Rock Auto size the only thing I can see if differences in tire packages and suspension packages. I figure the absolute base model AWD Tahoe box will give the best steering effort and 3 lock to lock. So I will purchase that when the weather get warmer or my box ***** the bed cause I took too much play out of the gears.

Before I bought my Redhead box I adjusted some play out of mine and I also had to go way past a 1/8 turn before I felt any improvement. I ran it like that for close to 2 years and never noticed anything other than the remaining slop I couldn't seem to adjust out of it. Eventually went to the Redhead box and its a night and day difference.
