Default Question on oil capacity?

I have a 88 GMC Sierra with a 383 stroker motor. I bought it recently and the previous owner put on a six quart oil pan. I changed the oil for the 1st time today and put in 5 quarts, started the truck and let it run for 10 minutes, then shut it down and let it sit for about 15 minutes and then checked the stick. It was right at the full line. If it has a six quart oil pan why is the stick reading full with 5 quarts added? What gives?

that doesnt sound right because if it has a 6quart pan it should take 7 quarts to fill (6 in pan + 1 in filter)

surely it doesnt use a quart of oil in 10 min. Just messin with ya

the only thing I could think of if it is actually a six quart pan, is maybe it's the wrong dipstick?
