Default Is my speedo broken or "uncalibrated"?

I don't know if speedo's are spring activated or if there is a computer circuit that keeps them in cal or what.

But last night I was sitting at a redlight and I noticed that my speedo was reading 60mph. As I acclerated the speedo kept track of my speed FROM 60. I turned the truck off and the speedo stays at 60.

Is this a simple fix or something expensive like the whole guage cluster? Is this a regular issue with all silverado's? or it just happens..

the needle is just chillin on the peg so in theory it can be spun but it is unusual, it sounds like the needle is turned

mine did the same thing, I brought it to the dealership under warranty and they replaced it. They told me the electric motor that powers the speedo, sometimes goes out or sticks....

so in theory I should be able to just gently manhandle the needle down to 0mph?

Its the stepper motor in the cluster. Needs to be replaced.. Don't know about undoing the battery.... but if you just start/turnoff/start/turnoff it will eventually get back right.

Mine is doing the same thing. I'm going to buy a stepper motor (lots on ebay) and replace it.

Kysilverado the motor definitly needs to be replaced?

It did correct itself. THe initial jerk of engine turn off got it back down eventually. Its been fine for about a day or so.

So its only a matter of time before it gets stuck again?

Give it a few days and it will do it again and get worse.... probably and yes the motor needs replaced. There are places you can send it off to be done but if you are hand with a soldering iron you can do it yourself. Have to tear into the cluster. If you take it on yourself be sure and mark the positions of the needles before pulling them off.
