Lower rad hose cold

Lower rad hose cold
I changed the thermostat yesterday on an 01' tahoe due to no heat. Easy to change and had heat afterwards. My question is why was the lower radiator hose still kinda cold when the upper was hot. The motor was at running temp. It was cold before I changed the thermostat. It even had coolant exit when I removed the hose from the housing. Never known the lower hose to be cool like that.

If you live further north than most like me I could usually grab lower hoses without burning myself a lot in the winter.
Maybe your radiator is just that good when it cold outside that you are still able to grab it without much fuss. You could temp gun them to see. Also if you installed say a 180 degree thermostat instead of a 190 it could play a roll.

I'm in NW Indiana so I'm southeast of you. Didn't grab the temp gun. Just thought it was weird that the lower hose was cool. I'm just used to the lower and upper being about the same temp on a normal sbc. The LS world is new to me.

I’m not surprised really.
The water pump and radiators in the trucks are excellent at controlling heat.
How does your heat work? I would drive it around and hit the lower hose with the temp gun.
I also wouldn’t be surprised that’s it cooling off and the thermostat is closed at idle with the temps in Indiana.
