Question identify engine

I have a replacement engine for a 2002 Silverado 2500hd. It is 6.0 liter and it was complete from intake to accessories. It was advertised as a warranty replacement that was never used. I purchased it from a Chevy dealer in 2004 and it has been in the corner of my shop since then. The GM part number is 12562150. Cant find any reference to it on the web. I need a new engine for my 2002 Trans Am and since this is laying around, I would like to use it. Plan would be to swap the 241 heads on to the 6.0. Other than that, I would prefer to leave it alone. My question is what cam is installed? I checked date codes and the block is stamped E022 and the heads are E282 and E292. So I am guessing it was built in May of 2002. Did Chevy start using the F body cams in the trucks in 2002? If they did, then I would like to leave the cam installed, just swap oil pan, heads, intake and accessories.

Are the heads aluminum ? If yes it should have the stock LS1 cam from what I have read , they should also have 317 stamped on them .

Yes, it has the aluminum 317 heads. Thats good news on the cam, the 5.7 runs well on that cam so I guess the bump in compression, from the 241 heads, will bring it right in line with the 5.7. Makes my ife a bit easier. Thanks.

Can you expand on that? I thought the 241's were good heads. What is different with the 243's?

OK, thanks. Good info. If I could bother you for a few more questions and than I promise to stop. Would it be worth milling the 317 heads to bring the c/r up to around 10.25? Also, on the old Gen I engines, some folks used a mixed set of rocker arms e.g. 1.5 on the intake and 1.6 on the exhaust. Does that still hold tru for the LS series e.g 1.7 on the intake and 1.8 on the exhaust? Main goal here is to have a nice running/sounding street car, no racing, just cruising. The car runs OK now and sounds good, just has a problem with metal chunks in the oil, so its time to replace it before a major failure.

I don't know about mixed sets of rocker arms but personally I would stick with the stock rockers and add the comp trunion upgrade. I also believe it would be more worthwhile to sell the 317's and pick up some 243's an port/mill them. Pretty sure you'd need to mill a whole lot off the heads to get 10.25 compression considering they have 71(?) cc chambers

Sound advice. Car is put away for the winter, so I have time to play with the 6.0. The 5.7 is now planned to get rebuilt and dropped in my old 88 GTA ( son has the car now), so blowing it up would be a waste. As for heads, not sure what I will do just yet. I have a spare set of 241's, only need a valve job. Not as much flow as the 243's, but this car is a cruiser. I purchased it to be a "gas in the back, key in the front and wash/wax" vehicle. I had hoped to get out of the heavy work ( turning 71 next month ), guess that plan has changed. Of course, if i leave the 317's on the 6.0, I could switch to regular gas and pinch a few more pennies! NAHHH!!!
