Default Gauge cluster question

A buddy of mine has a 2002 silverado and wants to replace the gauge cluster due to a faulty gauge. I know how to do it but I was wondering if the information ie, odomoter readings and what not are stored in the cluster or vehicle. If I change it and plug the new one in will the information be restored on the new cluster? Thanks

No the cluster stores all the information for your vehicle. You would have to take it to the dealer and I think they send it out to delphi and put the correct amount of miles on the odometer.

when i put my new one in(ss gauges) i went to have the dealer change the mileage.but it was to much work to send it off.BUT i was told that if i had brought it in before i installed it that they could have put the old mileage in it.

I talked to the dealer to see who they used to program mileage, they gave me a place and luckily it was local. Tech II cannot do it
