Default cluster issue

02 silverado 1500 4.8L about 150,000 miles

i have a good one. my cluster is dead. the only thing that works is the service engine soon light and is on. the code is for P0449 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Valve/Solenoid Circuit Malfunction. now heres the funny thing when i hook up the scanner the cluster powers up and starts to work. the only thing, is that it reads empty on the gas gauge. now as soon as i clear the code the gas guage reads correctly for a few seconds then the light comes back and it reads empty again. i havent been able to find a wiring diagram. but if i remember correctly i think when i hook up the scanner i get ground on the grey wire on the cluster. and i think thats what powers it up. where the grey wire comes from i dont know.
now i did notice i have some rat damage under the hood. i looked around and it doesnt seem like any of the wires were damaged. i followed and checked the harness from the pcm to the firewall. it looks like only the insulation on the firewall was eaten. now i havent checked on the wiring for the evaporative by the gas tank.
has anyone had any similar symptoms? im guessing its going to have something with the rat damage but im hoping its not. if anyone could help me out with a wiring diagram it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 99 with 147 on it. I have been having a problem with my odometer not lighting up. It started a few months ago when I bought the truck, and completely stopped working. I finally took the cluster out, and inspected it. There was a bad solder under the board for the odometer. It looked like they used bad solder or something. I soldered it again and have not had one problem since. Has this truck ever worked properly for you? You don't by chance have a friend that will let you use theirs for testing do you? It only takes a couple of minutes to pull one.

i know GM had some bad solders on the clusters. my odometer would blip out and then completely went out. did a little research and found out there is a common point on the back of the odo that has a bad solder connection- pulled mine apart and sure enough the solder was weak, bent the wire and resoldered and all is good.
