He didn't mention the PCV consumed about pint? The new synthetic oils don't suffer from degradation like that, but dino oils do.

When i first got my truck i used castrol gtx 5w30 cause thats what dad was using in it.
I run the pissout of that 5.3. It stayed on the 6500rpm rev limiter more times than not out playing in the pasture for hours at a time.
Changed it bout every 5k or so.
Went turbo and started using mobil 1 5w30 syn, changed it bout every 10k, filter at 5k.
My 5.3 had 180k miles on it when i took it out. No sludge or any kinda build up.
The 6.0 is pushing 150k now and when i put a new oil pump oring in it the pan still looked new with a slight gold stain from the oil it looked like.

I try to tell every body the 3k mile oil change is just wasting oil/money.
But most just keep on.

All our work trucks were diesels and we changed those at 7500-8500 miles. 80% time we were pullin 8k pound trailers. All 5 trucks now are kickin close to 300k.

I now basically just change my oil when i think bout it. Haha once a year or so. Motors are cheap.

So I was talking to the service guy here and he just told me to do every 5,000 miles, even on dino oil. He said these diesels just don't wear enough to constitute anything less. It's new and has a 100,000 mile warranty, and I don't keep vehicles passed the warranty anyway. lol
