my avalon is almost at 15k on conventional oil and the dipstick still shows new clean looking oil. i'll probably change it here soon just because. im sure charlie will want some of it to play with his oil analysis crap lol. i think the oil could go further, but the filter????
I'd swap the filter to be safe...I did the Amzoil 1yr/25k oil change/filter on my mom's and ex-wife's Toyota's with good oil analysis results, but the next time around, the Amsoil filters came with a note stating to change the filter at the manufacturer's recommended interval, although the oil could stay. Might have something to do with Toyota's previous sludge issues (which I believe was caused by a faulty PCV system and passages in the valve covers), but I'm not sure.

Bought my wife a brand new 2011, comes with a 5/100k warranty...book states change oil every 7500 miles...so if warranty covers those miles, 7500 it is.

What kind of oil though? Full synthetic? I can see that, but that would be pushing it on Dino oil. Wife's cadillac is every 10k, full synthetic though.

As said, this is my first diesel, so it just doesn't seem so cut and clear anymore.

After somee research and though, I am realizing that diesels are very low revving, iron engines, so they don't wear like any other engine. Thinking a Dino oil with regular change intervals of 3-4k is probably best, and it's more because of the fact they are subject to more contaminates not related to wear.

I use mobil 1 and change out the oil every 6k. I change the filter evry 3k. The oil is actually pretty clean too. My truck uses no oil inbetween changes and the catch can is usually completely dry.

My old 4.8 would use a quart every 1-2k and it was way dirty. The catch can usex to get rather full too.

Rather strange comparisons cause the 4.8 had 70k when pulled and i owned it since new. The lq9 had 100k on it when i dropped it in.

I remember when I worked in a GM dealer, I was in one of the service dept meetings. Our service manager told us to stop putting the little stickers in the window, and that they were telling the customers to go off the OLM. The dealership owner immediately stated that he didn't want us doing this because it meant less customer visits and less money in his pockets. So yes GM's proper procedure is now going off the OLM, what they tell you may be different.

I use Pentosin and change it every 8000 miles. It's not burnt or smelly either, just a little dirty which is usual for an old engine.

The problem is all the additives and detergents for protection are burnt up by 5K, hince the half a quart low, this is what a chemist who use to work for shell always use to tell me.
