5.3-6.2 similarities
I have a 2006 Chevrolet 2wd truck with a 5.3. I have someone who is interested in buying the engine out of my truck. My question is, which 6.0 and 6.2 engines (year ranges and vehicles found in) will bolt and plug right in (excluding tuning). I have been told that the cam plate (for the cam sensor) on my engine is a single slot and the others are 4 slot. Would this be the only thing I would need to swap out to bolt a larger displacement engine in my truck? Thanks for the input guys, let me know what you know. Thanks Ryan

Your 2006 5.3L is a Gen III engine, so for a drop in no hassle larger engine, you will want to look for a 2001 thru 2007 Classic 6.0L, which is also a Gen III. It doesn’t really matter whether you pick up a LQ4 or LQ9, as either will be a nice upgrade. The LQ9’s have 6 tenths more compression and fetch more money, and depending on which year LQ4 your comparing it to, may have stronger internal components. Any year LQ9 is a good engine as long as its in decent shape, and while an ’01 thru ’03 LQ4 will work just fine, GM started trying to address the cold start knock complaints a little each year and around ’04 they got coated piston skirts and at least by ’05 they had floating wrist pins in conjunction with the heavier duty rods from the LQ9. Some believe the heavier duty rods were already released by ’04, maybe, but never-the-less by ’05 they were and as long as you can pick up a newer low mileage engine you should be in good shape.
The newer 6.0L LY6 “Iron Block / Aluminum Heads” or L76 “Aluminum Block / Aluminum Heads” & 6.2L L92 or L9H “both of which have Aluminum Block / Aluminum Heads” engines that were released in the newer body GMT-900 ’07 and up trucks are Gen IV engines equipped with VVT and will require additional effort to install in place of your current engine. The L9H is similar to the L92 but equipped for E85 flex-fuel use.

That's a good understandable answer. Thanks!!! Where might I find information on what all is required to put an 07.5+ engine in my truck? Here on the site under the Gen IV section?

The Gen IV truck engines will bolt in place of your Gen III with no other changes, but due to the 6.0L & 6.2L engines using rectangular port heads instead of cathedral port heads, you will be required to also use the intake manifold and throttle body from the newer engine. The Gen IV truck engines also have a 58X tooth reluctor wheel instead of your current 24X tooth piece and would have to either be swapped or one could use the signal converter box from Lingenfelter. The knock sensors were relocated from underneath the intake manifold as used on the Gen III’s to the sides of the engine on the Gen IV’s and one would need to appropriate a knock sensor extension harness to relocate the sensors. The same can be said for the camshaft position sensor, it moved from the rear of the engine on a Gen III to the timing cover on a Gen IV and you would need to obtain an extension harness for that. You would also need to swap the VVT camshaft, lifters and timing gear, as well as timing cover for non VVT pieces such as from an LS2. These are just some of the hurdles you will need to clear, but should give you an idea of what you may be in for if you decided to move up to a Gen IV. There are a lot of posts that go into more depth as to what is required, should you decide that you actually wanted to make the move.
