4L80 swap, didnt trim the long yoke. Whats the potential harm?
So I did the swap and didnt trim the long yoke. everything is working as it should but there is a noise in first gear only. As soon as it shifts to second gear the noise goes away. Best way I can describe the noise is a "whirring" sound. Could the sound im hearing be from me not trimming the yoke? What are the potential problems i could run into from not trimming it?
Truck is an 03 RCSB 4.8 and trans is out of a 06 express van with 60k miles. Circle D converter, HD2 kit. HD2 kit done by reputable transmission shop.
Seems to me like the noise would always be present if it was an issue caused by the yoke being too long.
Thanks in advance.
p.s. I know, I know, i should have just trimmed it like everyone says, but it fit with what seemed like plenty of room so i just sent it.

Launching!
My 4L80 makes a whining noise in first gear and has since I installed it 6 years ago. Its not very loud but it is there. When you say trim the yolk do you mean the drive shaft? No way my original driveshaft would fit, I had one made.

You both sound like you are describing what I read is a noise made by the blades in the torque converter cavitating. I wish I could find the article again, but one thing that I remember is that the noise can be eliminated during manufacture or rebuilding of a torque converter by cutting some notches in the trailing edges of the offending blades. I don't remember which blades, either. Not that which ones matter, I just wanted to bring up cavitation as a possible source of the noise. My truck did it when I put in my first aftermarket converter. A kind of far away whirring, whining, whistling underwater, turbine like, turbo under water like noise.

After digging around on google and calling a few shops, there is a common explanation. 3 of the 5 people i talked to said the sound im hearing is straight cut gears. They all said the straight cut gears are one of the things that make the 80e strong and the noise is completely normal. The other 2 said they didnt know what it could be without tearing it down. I feel a little better about it now though haha
