Default 4B Cummins in a GM half ton.

Neighbor has a 4B Cummins for sale with a turbo 400 GM transmission attached. He got it out of a small delivery truck. The 4B is the 4 cylinder version of the 6 cylinder Cummins that's in a jillion Dodge HD pickups. About 120 hp. It would seem to make an economical errand running truck. I know it wouldn't tow much, but I have bigger trucks for that. Has anybody seen or heard of this swap being done before? I know it would probably go in a half ton dodge easier, but I just can't bring myself to drive a dodge. Thanks.

It would do pretty good for economy, even better with an overdrive tranny. Is 4B turbo?

Try here http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/index.php. Is it the 4B or 4BT the turbo makes a big difference in power and economy.

It'll work. I would do it. Sell the TH400 and get a 700r4 and run at most 3.42's or even 3.07's gears. And you should see 25mpg!!! easy with a turbo and innercooler.

Interesting site. Have to bookmark that one. The engine is turbocharged and air/water aftercooled. I feel like it can easily be turned up a bit. An overdrive tranny would sure be an asset. If I can keep the revs under 2000 at cruise, 25+ mpg should be easily done. My '03 6Speed DMax powered 4X4 2500 will get 20+ if I drive under 70mph and don't tow anything. It weighs over 7000#. A half ton reg cab should come in well under 5000#. Still can't believe Detroit hasn't done anything like this in a half ton or even compact pickup.

They did! It was the Chevy LUV. And you could get te 6.5L in anything back in the day.

The biggest thing is it gives you option of running WVO or bio as well.

i was watching some movies last night, and saw 4bt swaps in a 93 suburban, an early 90`s chevy 2500 longbed, a broncoII,a scout,jeeps.... and a hummer H1 truck... no less. they`re putting these motors in everything. the guy in the suburban was claiming 26 mpg.

I actually owned one of those bad boy Chevy Luv's back in the early '80's. It wouldn't pull the hat off of your head, but it would pass a fillling station or two. It had an N/A 2L motor if memory serves.

The excuse they gave back then was that a carbed gas motor was so much cheaper to manufacture vs a fuel injected diesel. Different now??

In Trucking magazine a few months back some guy put a Cummins 6 in a 72 C-10 Chevy, with the NV 5-speed, and a 3.08 geared 9 inch.

I think he could run 12 seconds and get 25 mpg.

So if you turbo the truck, get a good Overdrive, and a excellent tune you should cross 30 MPG easily.
