Default '04 Yukon XL died at 70mph now ammeter is haywire..

My wifes Yukon has the well-known stepper motor problem on the speedo but since it has 80k on it, I haven't spent the money to repair it. Tonight, though, we were driving on the interstate and when I stepped out to go around a truck it DIED and the battery idiot light came on. I put it in neutral and it wouldn't restart. I coasted to a stop, put it in park and it started right back up. Problem is, now the amps are pegged above 19. I made it the final 10 miles to my destination and shut it off. Restarted and the gauge started and 19 amps + and swept further right until it hit the bezel!

I assume the ammeter is toast now just like the speedo but why did it die? Just coincidence? VATS? Anyone heard of one doing this?

I'll have the charging system checked out tomorrow.

That's a volt gauge, not an ammeter. If it's overcharging, it could be a bad battery, or alternator. If you think it might be an inaccurate gauge, bust out a volt meter and connect it at the battery while the engine is running. If it reads normal, you have a bad cluster, if it matches the gauge on your cluster, then test the battery and the alternator. I hope that helps you a little.

Thanks for the reply. Technically speaking you are correct. I guess using ammeter is showing my age. Cars with generators used ammeters before alternators came into being. I've used them interchangeably forever. More on Ammeter/Voltmeters...

The charging system checked out fine. Still don't know why it shut off at speed. Voltmeter is DOA.

So, what are your plans with that '36? Looks like a killer project.

Well, the drivetrain plans changed recently. I had a Turbo Buick (Grand National) motor/tranny in it. I recently sold off all of my Buick stuff and I'm building an 5.7 LS1 with all '05 5.3 truck externals (essentially a 5.7 aluminum truck motor when it's done) with a 4L60E behind it. Once it's up and running and lined out, I plan to turbo that motor. I'll miss my Turbo V6 but the LS1/Truck stuff is just too cheap to pass up! I'll buy another GN later.

Other than that it's chopped 3" and bagged. I built the triangulated 4-bar for the rear (8.8 Ford Explorer). It's got tubular A-arms up front on a Fatmans Mustang II style IFS. The rear fenders are 'glass and are 2" wider than stock. The decklid is 'glass too but all the rest is steel.

The wheels are 20" and 17" TTIIs.
