Default who has a 5.3 dod engine? got an idea for a project

got me a 87 porsche 944 for cheap. i want to just drive it get good mileage with the thing BUT i just dont think i can do that. they sell kits that make puting a gen3 motor in this car easy and kinda cheap. whatever i do it will need to maintain good mileage.

the problem with the swap is these are rear tranny cars. the swap keeps the stock tranny or you can swap in a tranny from a turbo model. best case the thing will stll be spining over 2500rpm down the interstate at 75mph

i know the dod motors dont do all that much to save fuel on most vehicles because they are geared to run low rpms all ready but on this thing where it is going to be spining too high of rpms i bet the dod would help a ton. maybe take it from 20mpg up to 30?

what are my options for dod motors? are they only 5.3 iron block motors or are some/all of them aluminum? do they have 6.0's or 6.2's or 4.8's as dod. idealy a 4.8 dod all aluminum.

what vehicles do these motors come in? what years? anyone know of one avaliable? i am sure they will be cheap soon but might be a little expensive right now.

I am sure you can find a 4.8 crank pretty cheap to swap into a DOD 5.3

I'm pretty sure every 5.3 engine in NNBS trucks are DOD. It's standard, not an option on 5.3's. DOD is not available on the 4.8 and 6.2. A Gen 3/4 swap into your Porsche would be cool but will it make the car reliable? Just from looking at your past vehicles, I could definitely see you installing twin turbos and nitrous. Once that happens, it won't be a reliable daily driver anymore, lol.

so every new 1500 with a 5.3 is dod? there should be some cheap ones out there in no time then. iron block i suppose?

no not all nnbs trucks are dod. however all of the blocks are setup for it. just some dont have the modules or the dod unit in the block. but yes you could buy any block and bolt on in. personally i think it wont help that much. GM only claimed 8% better fuel economy. thats not going make that much of a difference. the dod only kicks in under certain parameters. not all of the time like some think.

idk about dod, but i would go with alloy 5.3 block from ls4
with 4.8 pistons/rods and crank, stock 4.8 pistons are tru flat top,
and 5.3 are 7cc spherical dish, with 5.3 heads
the 4.8 rot. assembly will assemble right in to 5.3 ls4 block
and the flat top pistons will bring up the scr
