i have been hearing talk about either being in 3rd gear or 2nd gear. i heard that the transmission ratio is better (1 to 1) on the 3rd gear. is this correct? or should i do a dyno run in 2nd gear? thanks.....

The 2nd gear dynos are done because the rev limiter is set to low to go up to 128 (for the trucks). The 3rd gear dyno is when you have LS1edit or HPPIII's and can adjust limits.

I have usually done mine in 2nd. You will get slightly higher numbers in 3rd. I tried to get one in 3rd once. Removed the speed limiter, but with the big AT tires, it was getting scared at 140+ mph. So its still 2nd gear for me.

 

doesnt that give you an innacurate HP number when you are in second? wouldnt it show the HP as higher than it actually is?

 

I would think you'd get higher numbers with 2nd gear, being a lower gear ratio. That's the whole point of a lower 1st gear, higher 2nd, higher 3rd, and higher 4th. More multiplication due to gear ratio. 3rd is 1 to 1.
