lol thanks. I try to search for as many answers as I can. Most likely someone else has already asked the question I'm wondering about. I read a lot on my breaks at work. I'm kind of dense when it comes to some stuff so I have to break down and post up the questions. Which is why my posts are usually so long.

Every time I search for information about turbocharging these trucks all I hear about is how everyone needs to turbo the 4.8L. That the shorter stoke can handle boost better and is more resistant to detention.

The other part is what I was talking about in an earlier post. After reading about good ideas for boosted engines, I've realized that it's recommended to upgrade to head studs, and arp rod bolts. I can't put head studs on without pulling the engine so why not do the upgrades to a different engine and keep my stock one as a back up?

I'm not opposed to boosting a 5.3L. It's not a total money thing. I'm trying to keep everything as cheap as possible. So far almost my entire build has been with parts that are used. Or parts that folks bought and didn't use, but decided to sell.

I basically work all the time, but keep tabs on this site and a few others, for deals. I'm getting real close to the turbo part of my project so I'm starting to get really excited.

Being that the 5.3-4.8s are a dime a dozen, I would get my truck finished, then shop.

Buy a gen 3 4.8L
Install ls9 head gaskets

Install ls7 cam
Install ls2 timing chain
LS7 cam in a gen 3 block is a no go doesnt have a relucter ring on the cam.
Would have to convert to a new style timing cover with sensor in front of it with the correct cam gear
LS6 cam in a direct drop in for a gen 3......204/218 .551 117.5 lsa

D'oh! My bad, typo on my part. I meant LS6. The cam I got came out of a 2002 Z06.

Also, I found out that the 2001 LS6 can has different specs than the 2002+.

2001 LS6 cam
207/217 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
116 LSA

2002+ LS6 cam
204/218 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.551" / 0.547" int/exh lift
117.5 LSA

...and for giggles...

5.3L
190/191 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.466" / 0.457" int/exh lift
114 LSA

If you've been around here long enough you'd know that things come and go. It's the flavor of the week. It works well but so does turbo'ing any of the other LS engines. If you have a solid 5.3 I see no reason to go through all the trouble to swap a 4.8. Hell, I'd never go down in displacement but that's just me. You wont be in boost all the time.

Well, I guess that brings up a good point. Say you're in my shoes. You have a turbo kit you've pieced together. You want to buy another engine to boost. For arguments sake, let's say there are three engines sitting in front of you. All with the exact same mileage and all the same price.

One is a 4.8, one is a 5.3 and one is an 6.0. Which one would you choose and why?

6.0 no question. Ask Smokeshow...the 4.8 is a dog out of boost.
