Default trans fluid leaking out of tailshaft of tranny ?

Ok guys I finally moved my truck and saw that i was leaking trans fluid out of the tailshaft where the yoke goes for the driveshaft goes into the tranny. So what does this mean and how bad of news is this also it looks like there is a 1/2 of inch of fresh looking metal on the piece that goes into the tailshaft is that normal? Thanks again.

Not sure how old your truck is but it could just mean you need a new seal on the out put shaft. Its a seal just like the crank seal up front on the engine. Real easy to replace, pull the drive shaft and press in a new one. What do you mean by "fresh looking metal"? It may just be the part of the yoke that rubs on the seal. It should be clean and shiny.

Marc, just like l82gofast said it sounds like your slip yoke seal.

What may have happened is your slip yoke seal blew out and drained the tranny fluid. Some of the auto-tranny guru's will have to chime in here, but you may can replace the seal, fill it back up with fluid and see if your tranny will operate?

I used to go through about 1 a year on my transfer case slip yoke on my jeep. It would do the same thing, leak out, and start acting up. I'd replace the seal and o-ring, fill it back up and it would be good for another year. I have no idea if that will work for an auto-tranny after it has been drained? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />
