Default NV246 Transfer case experts: Can these get "stuck" in 4wd?

Greetings. On Monday my truck lost all forward/rear gears and would only rev like it's in neutral.

Being that the dealership i bought the truck from gave me a 3month/3k mile warranty, their warranty company wanted me to take it to one of their "approved" vendors.

Unfortunately that approved vendor was an Aamco here in Colorado.

Anyways, it has taken them 2-3 days to say that the "transfer case is stuck in 4wd" and would need to be rebuilt. However, it threw no codes regarding it, and the pushbuttons on the dash would go from 2HI to 4HI, etc ,without any issues.

Additionally, these guys said my tranny fluid was "burnt" and "discolored looking". Literally the day this happened, I checked the fluid and it was completely clean and non-burned looking. It looks like fresh/new fluid.

Is there any way the NV246 gets "stuck" in 4WD? Through my research, it looks like they have clutch packs, which would simply wear out and only keep it in 2WD.

Thank you for your help. Wish the warranty company would let me take it to a shop that I wanted to use (Wizard here in Denver,CO).

No one at all? Trying not to get ripped off......this thing did not leak a drop so I doubt the oil pump wore out the rear part of the case.

Do the clutches fail and hold pressure keeping it in 4wd? Did the chains fail? What goes wrong on these NV246's?

All I can think of is the encoder motor causing the xfer case to stay in 4wd.

My truck did some funky things when the encoder motor sensor was going out. Never threw a dash light, but there was a code stored. I forget what it was or what it claimed was the culprit, but a replacement of the encoder motor sensor and I was good to go. Never had a problem since.

Well, warranty company put a new tcase and tranny in it for free. Albeit used. So we'll see how many miles I get out of them.
