Default Traction advice

With my current set up, I need traction!

I have an open differential, so I only spin one wheel..... and man, does it spin. I bet I have another second to shave 0-60 if I could just get traction. Right now, if I put it to the floor anywhere in 1st gear I start spinning or if I don't floor it I end up shifting at about 4300, which sucks.

Alright..... which differential should I get? What other kind of things like traction bars can I get to beef up the rear suspension. I will continue using the 255 tires until they wear out at which time I may buy new rims and wider tires.

Any advice here?

Eaton Posi

If traction is still an issue, look for tires or traction bars.

I ran the Auburn Pro Series in my last truck and never had any issues with it.

I think there is about 20 bucks difference and no difference on the install. About the only difference is the Eaton is rebuildable and the Auburn isn't. I've heard some guys wish they had gone with Eaton, but nothing about the Eatons.

The Eaton hooks! Plain and simple. I've run some 12's on it so it's taking a little bit of power.

Here's the way my install went:

Jack up the rear, do it on a gravel/dirt driveway and you'll see why it's worth putting in a how to.

Take the tires off

Remove break calipers with a HUGE breaker bar

Remove rear cover

Take 3 days to figure out how to get the C clips out of the carrier

Pull the axles out

Remove the diff, which again took a good while because it's PRESSED into place

Beat on the pinion with a sledge

Pound on the pinion gear with a air hammer you just went to get

throw it all back together half assed

get some stock wheels/tires from a friend to swap with so you can get it on a trailer

load it up using the winch on my Grizzly since it's not drivable

Carry it to a professional and explain to them what happened

Long story short ... get someone to do it. That way it's on thier shoulders and if they whine, you can get them to fix it.

How much did it cost you to get it put in? The truck is useless from a performance standpoint with this little traction, but I am finding a job with less hours (I can't work 55 hours with full time college) and I have this tranny to pay for.

So lets see, about 450 for the diffy... then another what.... 200 for the install? Can any ol tranny shop do it?

I'd go to a 4x4 shop to get the diff changed. One shop I called quoted 325. The next shop quoted 200.
