Torque Converter Install
#1
hey guys whats up, i was wondering how hard it is to install a torque converter, and what is involved. im pretty sure my buddies and i can do it, weve done a lot of work on our trucks, but never done a converter before...im pretty sure we can do it, but i want to know a little more about whatis ivolved....i guess we gotta drop the tranny? oh yeah, my truck is 2wd, and lifted so we can do it with out a lift i guess? oh yeah, what do yall think is the best bang for your buck converter? i want performance, but im not really into drag racing, so i dont want/need a super high stall converter. and i want to retain factory towing capacity. i was thiking maybe like a truck thruster 2600 or 3000....3000 seems kinda high, but everyone seems to like it. ive never driven a truck with a aftermarket converter, so what can i expect daily driving to be like with one? any different? any other suggestions? im trying to decide between a set of asm's or dean la pole headers, or a torque converter.....what do yall think? right now i just have a hpp3, exhaust, and fipk....

Here is a good article explaining the whole process. It is on a 98 Tahoe, but mostly everything major is covered.

I've had my converter for a week. It is by far the most noticeable mod I've done. It took me 2 or 3 days to get used to it. Now its perfect. I have a Yank 3000. I have a excab Z71.
ASMs are beter than the rest of the headers. They are longer and come ceramic coated.

i'm in the same boat as CRAZY. i hear alot about the yank converters and how they make a big improvement. i am too interested in this mod. i do tow a couple times a year and have bad traction, so i am a little reluctant about this mod. i have a '99 5.3 EC Z71 with stock suspension and stock tires. i was wondering if it would be a good upgrade, also should i get limited slip differentials like Eaton or Detroit lockers? how easy is it to install the yank3000? also, how easy is it to install posi? has anyone installed ASM headers on a 5.3 4x4? is there welding involved?

i know there is welding on the asm install cause they are long tubes. you gotta take off the old manifolds, and cut some of the cown pipe, then weld in new flanges on the down pipe for the asm's ti bolt to. i have an auburn pro series limited slip and love it. gives you good traction with out the noise and iffy street manners of a locker.

A 2wd converter install will be pretty easy. Things get more complicated ewith the transfer case on a 4wd. Not more difficult, just more labor intensive. Double the time it would normally take. It took me several hours over 2 days last weekend to get mine in.
