Superchips Microtuner 2001 vs Hypertech HPIII
#1
I posted this over on pickuptruck.com, but thought I'd post here also. I have a 2001 2500 HD 4x4 with the 6.0 and auto. I bought a Superchips Microtuner on special for $264. I was under the understanding that you could make the same parameter changes as you can with the Hypertech HPIII. I found out during the download/install that the only parameters you can change, with the Superchips Microtuner, is the remove the speed limiter, adjust for different rear end ratios, and different tire diameters. There is no moving the shift points around, no adjusting the rev limiter, no changing the fan temp turn on settings. All those are preset from Superchips, which in my case, it appears that the shift points are 5500 rpms under full throttle, up from 5200 stock. Still not high enough in my opinion, but it does feel somewhat better. My question is, has anybody dynoed the Superchips and Hypertech back to back, following the stock programming, to see what, if any gains are really to be had by one versus the other? I know Superchips advertises that their tuning is done in 400 rpm increments, whereas Hypertech is WOT only. Somebody here has to have tried both, please reply if you have any experience with this.
Thanks,
Jason

jasonSS, I have used both.first had hypertech then superchips.it depends what you want from programmer.hypertech gives you more personal adjustments, but only tunes at wot!! how often are you at wot? most of your driving is at part-throttle.on daily driving the superchips is more noticable of the two.like you said 'tune at 400rpm thru the power band' not just wot like hypertech.just my personal experience with the two programmers.

I have heard of using the Superchips enging programming and adjusting everything else with the HPPIII. I have a buddy that did a test of the superchips/hypertech on his 02 sierra. Here are his results:

I guess I'll be answering my own question soon enough. I already received the Superchips Microtuner, and have the Hypertech HPIII on order. I'll be dynoing stock vs superchips vs HPIII vs superchips and HPIII combined, and find out which really does help. If I get a chance, I may even track test them.

Email me with your results and I will put it on the web site. I did all my testing at the track but would love to know what numbers you get...

I tested both the Superchips Microtuner, and Hypertech HPIII at the dragstrip this last saturday (cool, overcast weather). I have a 2001 Chev 2500 HD 4x4 6.0 4.10's, with 285/75/16 BFG's, lot's of weight (canopy, etc). I was only able to get in 6 runs due to the amount of people there, but I think my results are pretty valid and repeatable. Every run I made, I launched at 2000 rpms by loading up against the brakes, to keep the launches/results consistent. I left the shifter in Drive. I had no wheelspin whatsoever. My first two passes were with the GM stock tuning, which resulted in an average of 16.656 et at 83.54 mph, with a 2.41 60 ft time. My next two passes were with the Superchips Microtuner. My average dropped to 16.317 et at 86.48 mph, with a best of 16.268 et at 86.59 mph with a 2.41 60 ft time. I had no problems whatsoever with pinging, and the 1-2 and 2-3 shift changes occurred at 5500 rpms, instead of the stock 5200 rpms. I next installed the Hypertech HPIII with the 87 octane tuning, and had the shift points set at approx 5700-5800 rpms. (peak power is at 5200 rpms, and shift points should be ideally 500 rpms above this). My time slowed to a 16.424 et at 86.01 mph with a 2.42 60 ft et. As the track was only allowing one more run before closing, I changed the HPIII tuning to the 93 octane program. I ran a 16.311 et at 86.51 mph with a 2.40 60 ft time. There was major pinging throughout the run, even though I had put in 92 octane gas for the dragstrip runs. A side point: for the last two weeks, I've been running the Superchips tuning for my everyday driving, and using 89 octane fuel, which I always used even before the tuning, with absolutely no pinging, ever. The amount of pinging I got with the HPIII tuning set on 93 octane, was unacceptable. Weather permitting, I will be going back to the dragstrip this saturday for more testing, this time with a different exhaust, less weight (no canopy, etc), and a few other minor modifications. I will be testing the Superchips and HPIII tuners only, this time, as they have shown to both have improved over the stock programming. Although I think alot of the gains are coming from the raised shift point rpms.
