Stroked 4.8L
#1
undefinedundefinedHi, I am new to Ls1 tech, I have a '99 Gmc sierra with a 4.8L v8. I recently purchased an Ls1 Crank, cam, valve spings, and new GM roller Hydraulic lifters to put in my truck. I just wondered if this would help my performance any? Also, my truck has a 4L60E transmission, I have read several posts and have heard this can be a troublesome trans, the truck has 115,000 miles on it and I have been manually shifting it, it hasn't gave any problems yet, what are the chances that it will. If it does give problems what will I need to do to it. I am thinking of getting a nelson performance pcm, what kind of stuff do I need programmed to pcm.
Thanks,

Yes, it will be a 5.3, but the LS1 crank is a shade lighter, and the cam is larger, and larger is better. I have also heard the the 4.8 has flat topped pistons, and that the 5.3 do not.

not to rip on your idea but you can get a decent 6.0 for around $1000 and you will get a real nice power increase with that. you could even part out your 4.8 and probably get $300 or so of your money back.

I know this idea may be crazy at first, I even thought it was crazy. The engine has 115,000 miles on it, and I know it has many years left on it in its stock form, but why not go ahead and rebuild it. I am trying to build a "quick" truck on a budget. I found an ls1 crank with only 10-15 thousand miles on, the cam as well, both at a great deal. The crank journals are still standard size, and the cam is in perfect condition. The rods are also in excellent condition, but I will go ahead and have them serviced at a machine shop. And the lifters are brand new from GM, and the valve springs. All in all I have less than $430.00 in the project as of now.

btw, the motor comes with a 3 month warenty, before they let them out the door they put it on some machine and spun it over to check for noises, they spin it to 1500rpm and check the oil presure. i am not 100% sure but i bet they could get more. this yard is monsterous!
