Like Parish said, your only about $500 off the mark so far. The stock LS1 cam won't do much for you and a 5.3 since that's what you will get out of it. With all the labor your fixing to get into, your not going to be happy for long with what you will get. Planning on a power adder soon?

The Pistons Are The Same For The 4.8 & 5.3. In Fact The Entire Engine Is The Same As Well As The Stamping On The Block. The Only Difference Between The Two Engine Is The 5.3 Has An Additional .50 Inch Of Stroke Which Gives The Additional Torque. The 4.8 Is A Little More Productive At Higher Rpms.

You know, I've been wondering the same thing. I looked around, and at least here in the southeast, 6.0L complete engines are going for around $1500-2500 or more.

Check out www.car-part.com. Look for 2001+ 6.0L (since they have aluminum heads) in 2500 Silverados in the Southeast--prices range from $1200 for motors missing parts to $2800.

LQ9's (Escalade/Silvy SS motors) start around $2k and go up to about $4k.

I just don't see all of these "dirt cheap" 6.0L's that everyone says you can get for $1k!!!

i have purchased 3 6.0's, you may need to look a little or even watch and wait.

the 1st one was $1500 shiped to my door
the 2nd one was $1950 but came with a 4l80e and tcase
the 3rd one was $1100 at the local junk yard+tax

this junk yard is giant, they have over 1000 late model trucks on their lot, shipping would probably be about $200 but then their would be no tax(i think).

Carazy means that the 4.8 will rev higher produce more top end oomph. The 5.3 has almost 40 more ft/lbs of torque which is better for the heavy trucks for launch, towing, just about anything. Interesting note is that for around $500 you can bore out the block to the LS1/LS6 slug size of 3.905 and have a whole new world of perfomance options at your fingertips, cheaper too. Look in the Internal section for more info on punching out the truck blocks. It can be done easily and you end up with a strong iron block for future upgrades.

Yeah, but F1 motors rev to like 10-12k rpm...so they need the shorter stroke.

and, there can't be that much less rotating mass. The cranks are the same, the pistons are only marginally smaller, and the rods in the 4.8 are actually longer than in the 5.3, so that would probably make up for the smaller pistons.

more top end oomph than what? not more than a 5.3. i guess it has more up top then it does down low but how couldn't it, it has nothing down low

why would you want to bore it out to a 3.905" bore when you can just go get a cheap motor that is all ready a 4" bore? i can understand some people not wanting to mess with the internals of their motor and wanting to see what a 4.8 can do but if you are going to be pulling the motor and geting into that kind of project i see absolutely no reason not to go for the cubes.

weather it is bore or stroke, more cubes will make more power, it will also be more driveable, more fun, respond to all the aftermarket parts more dramaticly. the ONLY downside is worse gas miliage.
