Default Stock Y pipe

How restrictive is the stock Y pipe on a 5.3? A buddy is trying to find out if its worth replacing with a highflow unit. (flowmaster, magnaflow, dr. gas)

Thanks

I don't know the extent of you pal's mods but unless it involves forced induction/lots of nitrous/big cubes I do not see it being restrictive with a tune and bolt ons...

If your worried about restrictions with it ... for a temp solution, just unbolt it. You can look up in it and see it is pretty nicely built. For a more permanant solution, cut it off and have true duals put on. The factory Y-pipe isn't that bad really. It's the boat anchor of a muffler thats bad.

Thanks for the help guys. Forgot to add that its an ALL stock motor. At first he was just going to replace the muffler, but heard that the Y is pretty restrictive so I figured I would clear it up once and for all.

Would there be any benefits to replacing it on a stock motor and running a highflow muffler?

Thanks for the time

Nah that y-pipe aint too restirctive...ditch that pontoon called a muffler for something high flow like a Mangaflow/Dynomax/Corsa/Borla/Etc.

Stock cats flow pretty well and the piping is ~2.5" ->2.75" so it breathes fine for an N/A vehicle.

I'd just toss on a catback, intake, and a tune.

Ya ... what he said. Just eplace that muffler, that's the only 'restrictive' part in the stock exhaust generally speaking.

Of course the cat's are gonna cause some restriction, but that's kinda thier purpose. If you gut them or remove them, you will have to get tuned, o2 sims or live with an SES light on all the time. You will have to 'know someone' to get it inspected too.
