Default Stock 5.3 needs speed

I'm new, just joined today, and I just bought a 00 2wd 5.3L ext. cab silverado with 60k miles a couple weeks ago. It's got pretty good get-up and go, but I need some advice to get more power. I know there are the basic bolt-ons (K&N FIPK, headers, chip) but what else will help me bring my mid-17's truck down to the low 15's/high 14's? I was thinking maybe port and polished heads, and a new cam? I dont want to use NOS or super/turbo chargers (yet). Thanks

Oh yeah, how many extra ponies can I add before I need to start thinking about a new rear end/transmission?

ok, first don't messs with any tuning device. Have a custom tuned pcm by allen nelson Farmtruc on this board is his name. Also long tube headers a nice exhaust a stall and a cam will really get that thing moving. look into a yank Truck thruster 3000 and a 212/218 cam. this should get you their and maybe even into the low 14 high 13's if your lucky but most likely low to mid 14's.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I have a couple more questions- you said not to mess with any tuning device (So I guess that means not to get an aftermarket do-it-yourself chip), why would that not be a good idea? What exactly is a stall, and a yank truck thruster. Thanks for any information, I'm kinda new at this stuff so i need all the help i can get.
