i got a message out to chuck at flp but while i was waiting i called seth at cmotorsports.
i asked him about the 4l80e wondering if i should just build it now or see how much it can take first, if it is going to die at 450rhwp then i would want to fix it now. his repsonce was just put in a shift kit and see what happens, he told me they have seen 4l80e's with nothing more than a shift kit go over 700rwhp.
he also told me they they sell built 4l80e's rated at up to 1200hp when ever i should need one
i like what he has to say, i will post back when i hear from chuck to see if he feels the same way. anyone here have any other info or views?

That's sweet dood. Anyone local I talk to says the 80 is worse off than the 60 as far as strength goes. They also laugh when I ask about a performance 4L60 and say it's a POS to start with.
I hate being from a small town where everyone asks why the hell I want to mod my NEW truck and mess up the warranty and then laughs when I want to do it right so I won't be blowing threw tranny's. I don't think they really know that much about them .. just how to get in them and replace parts and get them running again.

Parish, what gearing are you going with?I'm thinking about 4.56 gears,26" tires and shifting into 4th in the 1/4 mile or keeping the 3.73s and spraying 100+ shot with a Nossle system. You are looking at a 55mph first gear with 3.73s.

Don't know if you've seen this one or not. Only problem is that it looks like a fully built 80 w/ converter is going to break the bank at just over $3000!!!!

It's a non-electronic version, so how would that work in our trucks? I sent a couple of emails back and forth with the guy, but he kept trying to tell me that I would need a $1200 computer to control the tranny. Heh, EDIT is wonderful...

My brother in law has been a GM tranny tech over 20yrs and he said that if GM built every tranny like the 4L80, he would need to find something else to work on for a living. He almost never sees them in the shop....

he didn't actualy say but i am under the impresion tranzgo is the way to go.
not sure on gearing, i think i will go with what ever gears i end up with in the front. if i get a 4.10gear front when i am ready to upgrade i will probably swap the rear out to 4.10
right now the gtech is showing 2.02 or so 60' NA and 1.72 or so 60' with the nitrous, and i do some times peal out on clean pavement a little, with more power steeper gears could create a serious traction problem.

I've got mine picked out in case the 4L60E gives up. Most of the 4L80E's that show up around here are 4wd, so when this 2001 2wd 4L80E showed up I thought I would grab it for some future R&D!
