Default salvage yard 5.3

Like title says. I'm looking at a 5.3 out of a 02 Z71 that was in a head on collision. about 50mph. Truck was hit on front drivers side. From about the bowtie back. Frame was bent up but motor was not moved back. Radiator is touching fan. Possibly busted the water pump. Would this be worth my time pulling or am I looking at busted block or damaged crank. Will get some pics soon. Basically need to know the physical strength of these motors.

9 times outta 10 they are fine. You need to make sure the motor mount bosses were not damaged.

10-4. I'm gonna offer the guy $100 since I'll have to pull it myself. Can I take the tailshaft off the auto trans and convert it over to 2wd?

$100 is a good place to start for the motor, I'd offer another $100 for the trans as well so you don't insult the guy but you might not have to worry. The 4x4 4L60E cannot be converted to 2wd without tearing through the entire tranny to replace the main shaft. The 4wd main shaft is longer than the 2wd main shaft, so unfortunately it's not quite as easy as unbolting the transfer case and bolting on a 2wd tail housing.

It's in my home town. You should see it. This guy has more 40's and 50's model cars than any show I've ever been to. Chevy's, cadillac's, couple of cuda's, studabakers. I bet there's over 100 different cars with hardly any rust and factory interior and paint. Anyone ever see a late 50's model Lincoln limo. It's two doors and longer than a 4 door pickup. Definetly a cool ride. Guess it's back to the drawing board for the trans. Anybody wanna swap for a 2wd 4l80?

Checked motor out some more. Drivers side manifold was pulled away from head. Looked like the bolts were stripped out of the holes. What's gonna be the best fix for this. New head, helicoil, retap the holes? What's the best way to check block for weakness? Just by looking at it I can't tell. Don't want to have to take it apart it get it magnafluxed.

got the engine out. the drivers side head has a chunk busted out of the side and you can see the entire exhaust valve. Must have been when the manifold was pushed back. Good news is the guy has another 5.3 or 4.8 with a 2wd auto on another pallet. He had it the whole time and didn't know till we started looking around. I don't know which one it is though. I did some searching but could'nt find a diffinate way to tell 5.3 from 4.8. Hoping to get this into my 68 camaro. I wanna do something similar to parish with the fairmont. Only a little more dd. Also planning on going with the the ls6 intake.

Pull a head and look at a piston. Or run the VIN (wich may not be 100% accurate)
