Default Port polish heads

Who has ported/polished their own heads? I've heard the stock heads flow pretty well. Where do they start to fall off? Would I make decent gains just cleaning up the casting and polishing them? Any help appreciated. Also what about valve jobs, how big is too big, and what kind of "angle job" needs to be done 3 angle, 5 angle? Thanks for the help

first of all, these heads are very easy to screw up. if you have experience doing heads you can read up on what to do and what not to do cause there is a lot of info on the regular tech site. i think just cleaning them up will produce decent gains but when you consider the time invested vs the gain and weather it is worth it? to me it would be. Also, BigKID did his own heads and i think BigTEX has some good insight on cleaning them up.

Yea that, and I'm not in any hurry, and if I screw something up, I cna just use them as boat anchors and try again. I did a set of small block heads a while back, but they were cast iron, and I never finished them. Made real good trot line weights though Aluminum should be a lot easier, and I think I'm just going to clean them up and polish them, I've heard theres not too much porting needed with these. May get them milled to up the CR a little also.

So cleaning out the heads can be done at home? I thought one had to take them to a professional, or at least someone good enough not to screw them up. When is it a good time to polish the heads (as far as mileage on the vehicle is concerned)??

as far as i am concerned, if your engine has been taken care of and has regular oil changes and so on, anytime is a good time to do mods. i just started spraying my 5.3 when it had 120K on the clock. looking to put it in the 12's as soon as this MS heat goes away.
