Which oil is the best of the best?
#1
Well I just figured something out. I'm using Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w30 and changing it every 3000 miles. If I were to use Redline/Royal Purple/Amsoil and change it at 4000 miles then I'd end up paying about the same.
So who has the best? I can get Redline at Summit, Royal Purple at a local NAPA and Amsoil at their site.

Penzoil 10-40. Ive used it in 9 different GM vehicles, and they have withstood my constand abuse. My 90' GMC had 226k miles on it when a drunk guy ran into it. Always used that oil in it and it ran like a champ. Only thing i ever changed on it was a PCV valve at 200k miles.

Im not seeing the reasoning. Mobil makes excellent synthetic although you will get different answers depending on what people use themselves. I've seen mills torn down after running mobil and they looked mint. IMO, switching to Amsoil, etc. will gain you nothing but time under the truck changing the oil. If anyone has any hard data sans personal preference or opinions comparing Amsoil or Royal to Mobil I am really interested in seeing it. I know about the warranty and all, so we can leave that out too, but if anyone has actually had a mill fail and had it replaced by an oil manufacturer I would like to hear that as well. My guess is that warranty claim would not be as simple as calling and saying "My motor blew and I was running your oil"

Dunno, these other guys recommend extended drain intervals. Considering that they are in the business of selling oil, I think it says alot about the quality of their oils.
Mobil 1's stance appears to simply be to follow the vehicle manual's drain intervals, I am using Mobil 1 now and have been since my truck was new, but I'm not interested in running a pretty good oil anymore. I'm looking for the absolute best oil out there, so I can change it less. I don't want to go much over 4-5k because the oil filter will get dirty before the oil goes bad.
Besides I can't find Mobil 1 for less than $4.99 a quart which isn't much cheaper than the others.

I have been running Mobile 1 in my '00 since it was new with no problems. The computer that tells when it needs changed goes to at least 4,000 miles each time. My Dad changes the filter every 3,000 and the oil every 6,000 on his vehichles without problem. Syns never break down, never thicken in the winter and never thin out in the summer.

Their is a new oil filter out their my father in law showed me,(it's for real) you don't have to change your synthetic oil for 10k miles. I know you think I am full of it. It's all about technology. Some Japanese company makes it and it cost about $70 for the first one, more or less shell and filter and then like $8 for every filter after that. That would save you some money.

My wifes step dad has a 92 chevy with 190k on it and has only changed the oil 4-TIMES since it was new. He used it as a work truck for his construction company. Lots of towing lumber. The motor finaly let go about a year ago. When we opened it up it was NASTY! gummed up bad. He topped off the oil when it got low with that wal-mart brand(kendal). Just goes to show how much abuse engines can take.
