well with a 6.0 you will have to get an ss or the new vho. to get a 5.3 you can get a reg cab. go with an automatic. 4 wheel drive will offer traction but also weight. get a reg cab 5.3 to be faster without doing a whole lot. if you go ext cab you will have to spend more. good luck ad welcome.

Where you live and what the weather is like might make a difference on the 4wd or not. 02Denali summed up the rest pretty good.
Check out the Fastest Truck list to see what different setups are running in the 1/4. That'll give you a good idea of what is needed and then you can start checking prices.

yea what 02denali said is right on. if you live in texas for example, you can slide into the new VHO which comes with the 6.0 but it is an ext cab. for many, the popular choice is to get the 4.8 and swap a 6.0 in to the engine bay. as far as 4x4, you have to decide what you are gonna do with it for you own personal needs. great for launching but as stated above, heavier and is gonna cost more.

Does not matter where you live! Far as 4wd is concerned Do drive around in snow storms? don't think so. driving on ice, 2wd has 2 wheels spinning(or just one with open diff) and going nowhere, 4wd has 4 wheels spining(most of the time just 2 wheels with open diffs) and going nowhere. Besides 4wd will not help you stop any faster on limited traction surfaces( I speak from 26 years of experience). Basically the times I have used 4wd is when mudding out in the weeds, truck pulling, mud running, or drag racing. I have yet to actually use it or need it during winter. I usually have my arctic cat ZRT 600 in the back. So added weight helps. going 2wd in winter just throw some sand bags in back. But you know your own personal need and desires.
Only thing for 4wd is for 1. offroad 2. for the holeshot. 3. truck pulling. 4. mud running
I find it funny that alot of guys I work with buy 4wd's for pavement only.WHY???? They pay added cost for 4wd, and maybe used it twice in the last 5 years.
I would go big. get the 6.0.

I've never purposely drove around in a snow storm but, have been caught in them before. Over the last couple years here we've had some pretty bad snow storms where the roads didn't get cleaned up for days afterwards. My 2wd truck couldn't even back out the freaking driveway cause the road wasn't plowed, kinda sucked. Being a light *** reg cab short bed doesn't help.
The added cost can be recouped somewhat when you get rid of the truck since 4wd hold there value better.
Where he lives could be a consideration. TX or Canada have very different winters.
Other than snow I don't think 4wd is needed for street use mainly what 8100 said above.
