a Tap is a tool used to make or "chase" threads. Chasing is what you want to do, it tracks along the original grooves and removes any burrs or damage from "cross" threading.

Thanks alot guys. This really helped. For tonight it took 7 washers. No leaks. Its a temp. fix. Thanks for the size as well. You guys rock.
