MSD boxes worth the dough?
#1
hey yall just thought id ask a quick question, due to LS powered motors i know their ignition systems are pretty good from the factory, i was just wondering if id benefit any response/power from goin with an msd box like the msd 6AL or the one specifically for the ls motors. if so should i have my tuner take out factory rev limit and just use the pills msd has or what would be best?
thanks for your time

You cant use a 6AL box on these motors.
You would have to buy 2 of their modular or digital boxes to make it work.
I highly doubt $800+ is worth it when the ignition system is far superior than the past days of single coil on distributor.
Plus, it was never noted by any article that I can recall of the LS based engines suffering from a weak ignition system.
I would put the money towards something else.

Plus,
If you check out their website they do not offer an ignition system for our vehicles.
They do offer DIS (Distributorless Ignition Systems) boxes for LS based engines that are carburated, but not EFI or MPI. Basically, you would have to have a stand alone ECU to run everything except the ignition system.
I know they use to offer the digital boxes that controlled up to 4-6coils all in one box, but I'm not seeing them anymore. However, it would still require you to purchase 2 of those boxes.
Now, the only thing that that do offer are the 8 replacement MSD coil packs and possibly the plug wires.
From past reviews, the 8 coil pack MSD replacement kit was not worth the money spent on them.
Its up to you, but be prepared to fork up some $$$$ for this so called upgrade!

I am guessing you would have to love it, so you can justify spending that kind of money on it..
As far as having the 6al, 7al box vs a old type of ignition, coil systems, I would say yes def a upgrade, being it will make and send, keep the volts up through out the longer run. Being our trucks, are using the coil packs, you have a plug wire that is so short, your not going to see a difference between on of them and stock ones..

I have a 6LS-2 (4x/58x) running my LY6. It shows that if I want to hook it up to an efi system you just need a special cable (which I bought and didn't need for carb'd) and control timing. It also allows you to use its 2 step limiter for staging, nitrous or whatever.
If anyone goes this way with an efi motor....I'll make you a great deal on the 6LS-2 cable (doesn't work with 6LS?) for it!
