Default LS6 spring pressure

Hey guys, I'm in the middle of piecing together my heads cam swap parts and I've run into an issue. I plan to run a comp cams 212/218 highlift cam (558/563) and I had originally planned to use the LS6 yellow springs. the comp cams tech I talked to today said that I needed a spring with 130#s on the seat and 300#s opening. I see that the LS6 springs are much lower at 90/260. WHat does using a weaker spring cause? Will the valves be lazy? Are they not usuable with my cam choice? Thanks for the help,

Clint

You could experience valve float too easily and performance could suffer from the valves not closing completely...

Yeah LS6 springs are only rated up to .550 lift, and with the aggressive ramp rates of new cams you probaly need more spring. I am running LS6 springs with the low lift version of that cam with no problems, but I don't think I would run 'em with the high lift version.

They're great for smaller cams and cams without aggressive ramp rates, and they don't break like the Comp 918's. No worries about having to replace them after 40K, and no worries about heating them up before romping on them. Lingenfelter uses LS6 springs with his cams that have .570+ lift....so I wouldn't exactly say that they "suck", they just have their limitations.

What sucks about em? I'm running low 13's soon be be in the high 12's running em. For you 1/8 mile guys thats a 8.37 @ 81 mph 1/8 mile. I guess if i liked changing my springs every 40,000 I would say they sucked too.

I'd just rather have a spring made for what I'm using it for, instead of something that might work. They're too weak of a spring IMO

a weak spring can damage the cam, bend pushrods. etc

strange the LS6 gets the "sucky" label, yet it was the comp 918's that had a bad production run and had to be recalled

the yellows were made to run in those 24hr races where 7000rpm is common and the engine never goes under 5000. I trust them for .570 with occasional 6500rpms.

Lingenfelter RIP

The Comp 918s were breaking because they changed who made them. The old reliable 918s were made by PAC, then they changed to another company = crappy springs.
