is that an adapter, i can't tell in the pic's.
if that is an adapter that will come off then you are probably ok but i still dont like diferent heads on there. if that is the actual crank then that motor is worthless and he lied to you.

Still not sure what you are trying to see. I put the flywheel back on and got as close as I could. Does this help you figure out whatever it is you're looking for. It's actually the flywheel off another 6.0.

your crank flange should be flush with that seal. it is sticking out right now. if that is the actual crank then you are screwed and that will not bolt up to a 4l60e
if that has an adapter on it then you are ok and it is a newer motor. here is a pic of the adapter.

the bigest reason i worry is those look like older 6.0 iron heads to me, the only motors they came on were the 99/00 with the crank that is too long. can you confirm those are aluminum heads? pull off a valve cover and take a pic.

They sure look and feel like iron to me. They guy who had the truck said they were his old 5.3 heads. I will get a pic in a minute. I have a 4L65E, but I don't guess that matters. Removing cover.....

Wow,this thread got long! I did not have the time to read it all but your motor failure sounds just like the one I had in the Dodge. The "knocking" noise is pieces of piston ring smacking around in the combustion chamber. Once they leave the area the noise goes away. Detonation and high EGT's due to poor tuning choices for me....
As for the motor I agree with Parish, that is an early iron head 6.0L motor. The casting number on the head ( lower right corner ) will tell all, no need to remove the valve cover. If it is a 5.3/4.8 head the number will be 862, aluminum 6.0L is 317, and i THINK the iron head is 843. That crank flange for the flexplate is poking way to far out to be the later model version.
