This just looks wrong...?

So last night I notices i had an oil leak but I couldn't tell where it was coming from. I looked like it was spraying from the back of the drivers side valve cover. So I removed the intake to look closer and I noticed the above picture. Why the Fluck is the bolt from the rockers showing inside the intake runners of my heads. Then on top of every valve i see about 4 drops puddled around the intake valve. Are my heads shot and what else could be leaking oil on the drivers side on the rear of the engine. I have oil sitting on top of the header on # 7 as if it was an oil. Maybe i just didn't tighten the valve cover correctly 3 days ago. I was leaking a little then now it's more. I just love these problems.

It's hard to seeon my phone but it's normal for the bolt hole to be exposed on ported heads. You are supposed to seal the rocker bolts. I used blue loctite.

Thats a really crappy pic. I can't see where you are talking about, but I do know what you are describing. I can't speak for other castings, but I know that the 317s have a rocker bolt boss that protrudes into the intake runner. When they get ported, some like to remove that boss for nice smooth airflow, and provide instruction on how to seal the rocker bolts when installing them. When the bolts are sealed properly (with plumbers pipe dope, or other thread sealant) there are no adverse effects.

I wonder if that's contributing to your oil consumption and KR issues...loctite is a thread locker but not exactly known for it's sealing capabilities. I would think that some RTV on the bolt threads would work. I can't remember what Richard at WCCH recommended to me...

yeah that was the best picture i could get. But the heads are ported edelbrock heads ported by lingenfelter. Okay good I used red locktie so it's okay then. I thought i had to get new heads lol. Thanks guys. now i just hope the oil is just the valve cover. Also the part store told me that the rear o2's are the same are the upstream o2's I thought i had read they were different. I didn't buy them because if its the case i'll take my rear o2 and put it up front.

I would NOT have used red loctite on the rocker arm bolts. You may never get them out now without damaging the threads

If you look again you'll notice the tip of the exhaust rocker bolt does not protrude as does the intake. Thread sealant is recommended when porting opens a window as you have on your intake bolts. The stuff is kind of expensive. About $8 for a tiny little tube about the size of a single use crazy glue tube. Watch the "O" ring gaskets on the rocker covers. They swell up once they absorb oil and have a tendency to pop out of their groove when the rocker cover is removed. You might get lucky if they don't pop out, but if they do you have to install new ones.

hmmmm, i never sealed up my rocker bolts when i installed my heads, and last time i had the intake off i noticed that bolt tooo... I have been using some oil so hopefully sealling up those threads helps. Thanks for making this thread!
