Default Impressions Of The Comp 212/218 114lsa Cam

I thought that I could give some insight to everyone that is considering a new cam. I know that anyone who has ever installed the wrong cam is almost neurotic when it comes to making a new cam purchase. I know that I have done this on several occasions & been left with dissipointment & dismay.

I previously had the Z06 204/218 .550 117.5 lsa cam in my 03 4.8. I loved the big end power of this cam but was left feeling empty off the line
This cam made 285 RWHP with a single flowmaster, K&N, & a hypertech back in december 2003 at 48 degrees. I just recently Dyno tuned my truck two weeks ago & made 273 RWHP after installing true dual exhast,x-pipe, headers, ported throttle body, & ls1 edit.

Although the peak numbers are less the second time around you have to consider the stall (robs a few horses) & the temp. which was a deathly humid 94 degrees on the dyno. After tweaking the timing & AFR I gained a greater amount of low-end torque, along with a much flatter curve & was able to produce h.p. up to 6400 rpm. (with stock springs)

Wednesday after careful consideration I finally decided on the comp 212/218 .529 .532 114LSA. There is nothing spectacular about the specs of this cam. After installing the cam with no amount of degree the truck would barely idle, the IAC was going apeshit! It kept trying to go back to preset values. I had to two foot it all the way back to the dealership. When I got back I fixed the idle problem fairly quickly & drove.

I noticed that the LTFT values where off quite a bit with the new cam & adjusted & drove. Yesterday played with timing (26 degrees advanced) & drove & I will tell you that this cam is a BEAR! It seemed almost identical to the Z06 until I started modifying the tune. The cam right now with the 20 inch wheels pulls harder than the Z06 cam with factory tires. I believe that having the timing advance come in sooner will allow it to bring on the power around 2000 rpm's. At 2600 rpms is where it see's 26 degrees & starts pulling like a bear. I intend bumping the advance up to 29 this weekend & seeing how it acts. I will have the tech 2 scanner to monitor knock.

I am hoping to get some dyno time next week. I would strongly reccomend this cam to anyone whith ls1 edit & dyno time or that is considering a dyno-tune. I am very pleased with performance so far. I hope this can give some you cam shoppers out there some insight into cam profiles. I will say that if I would have had a 5.3 or 6.0 or even a lighter vehicle like a regular cab I would have gone with a much more radical cam. But the torqueless 4.8 neede this cam!

i think as other cams start to be used, ones with closer durations, or perhaps reverse splits, they will become more popular over these single splits.

I know big tex said he was perhaps thinkin about a reverse split, and i know i will be when the time comes.

Mine ran ok on stock tune. Ran even better after I yanked the 99 PCM out. I have the 212/218 .522/.529. Allen is gonna tune my truck next weekend in Wichita and man Im looking forward to that. Need a good tune and a reflash! I posted some clips of my truck a few days ago.

I'm running a single pattern right now. I do plan on going reverse split when I change. I won't pick out cam specs until I firm up my final mod list.

Awesome review. Thanks for sharing the info... this is definitely one of the cams I'm considering.

Default Reverse Split . . .

I know a little about cams, but why the reverse split, how does that benefit?? I thought that was only when you were using a very restrictive exhaust or something . . .
