Default i have an idea. need opinions

i hear a lot of people talk about coatings for pipes. like ceramic coatings. what is in the coating? i ask because i grew up helping my family make ceramics like little figurines and dishes all kinds of things. they don't really do it any more. but i wonder if i could dip my pipes in the slip (the stuff ceramic are made from) then fire it in the kiln. would this be the same or similar?

That's a really good question. If that works give me a shout! Hell of an idea.

If it's the type of material I think it is, I don't think it would hold up, and not because of the heat. But I would think because of movement and vibration would cause it to break and fall off.

i think that would be the only down fall, if it got too hard and brittle. i know it fires at around 2000+*f so heat is def not a problem. maybe next time i go home I'll try a little piece of my exhaust or something and see how it does. not sure how it would do with expanding either.

I think this is true, header coat ceramics have to match the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the base metal (which is how much it grows due to temperature). If the two material's CTEs are not matched pretty well the thinner material will flake off when the temperature changes.

This paper makes it sound like there are a lot of additives.
