how to use push rod measuring tool and how to properly set it up to measure pushrods?

i bought a comp cams push rod measuring tool and it did not come with instructions. i have no idea how to use it or properly set it up to measure..can anyone please help me out here. thanks

and my gauge is a 6.8 to7.8 gauge..so that would mean that screwed all the way down, it would be a 6.8'' length..then every full rotation id add .50'' to 6.8. how would i set it up to measure? put #1 piston to TDC, install the gauge, torque rocker down and adjust the gauge until theres no up and down motion, just can be able to spin it with slight drag?? just a guess.

You may not be able to roate and open the tool at all once its installed. I forgot on theses motors. IIRC I had to get it close and do 1/2 turns untill I got the slop out and then another 1/2 turn to get preload.
