Default How to fix a spun main bearing?

I'm most likely going to purchase a '78 F-250 with a 460 in it. And from what I have been told, the motor has a spun bearing.

Am I correct that I will need a crank kit? I think I found a shop locally that sells a crank kit for this engine for $110. Does that sound about right? I can most likely do the work myself/with friends, but what does this involve doing? Can I leave the engine in the truck and just drop the pan, or will I need to seperate it from the tranny and remove the engine?

depeding on how bad, the block might be junk. You will have to pull it and have a machine shop check and line hone the main bearings. $110 is cheap for a crank kit, to me.

well seeing as how im getting the complete truck for under $200 most likely, I'm tempted to just buy a rebuilt 460 or 351 to slap in it. Think that'd be cheaper in the long run?

Why not just rebuild the motor that's in it with better internals? You can do that for much cheaper than buying a complete rebuilt motor. Depending on if the crank is messed up you should be able to use it, the block, the heads, and the rods. Get the block bored over just a little and you'll have a nice little motor that you can say you built yourself. Honestly, if you can read instructions and follow some tolerances it's easy.

It has been sitting for awhile, this vehicle used to belong to an old family friend of mine, and has been sitting at a place of business that it was sold to a couple years ago and has just been sitting. So after all this rain clears up around here, I'm gonna go take a look at it and see if the engine is salvagable. If not i'll just get a rebuilt motor.
