Default Honest responses please: Does manually shifting my tranny cause it to die?

Well... as some of you may have gathered from my posts, my tranny has dumped on me.

The only reason I can possibly think of is because I manually shifted it.

Truck has 75k on it, I've never neutral dropped it nor have I ever powerbraked it (it doesn't have a posi, no point).

Question: does manually shifting the tranny cause it to die quickly? At about 60-70 mph, I love to downshift manually to 2nd and race Hemi's on the freeway.

Advice please!

Downshifting will cause it to burn up the overrun (coast) clutches. That's why in tow/haul mod, it doesn't do engine braking.

What happened to it? Is it just not pulling anymore?

Flyer, thank you for your post.

I was driving through town normally, and I heard a whirring sound in the tranny, a very very faint grinding. Then, it started slipping in 2nd gear.

I went into Home Depot to do my shopping, returned, started the truck, and it drove fine for about a 1/4 mile. I shut it off, waited 15 mins, and it drove fine again for a 1/4 mile!

Basically, after the 1/4 mile ... it only works in 1st gear. As soon as it shifts into 2nd, it slips.

thanks,

Chris

The only time I manually shift is to downshift to 2nd on the freeway at 55-75mph ... damn Hemi's!!

I would say 2-3 times per week.

it's not good for it, but not likely the cause for the failure. as for reasons though, just get it programmed to shift where you want it and not have to downshift it.

I doubt that was the main reason unless you were going like 60 and dropped it to low alot or were just crazy rough doing it. I dont do it because I believe it has to have some negative affect even if slight but then again there is plenty of worse things that we put our trannies through!

I've heard manually shifting the 4L60E DOES hurt it, but I can't give you any solid info. You can also check the automatic tranny section on this site - that's where I heard this bit of info.... I'm sure you can run some searches to dig the same info up...
