I'm thinking of dropping the old tranny off at a tranny shop, having him install the servo, transgo, and swap the tailshousing, and then installing it back in myself.

thanks,

You need to pull the pump off to get into it. There's a special tool required to do that. Once you get that off you have to pull the input drum out, then comes a fat snap ring that you have to hold down a spring loaded plate to get off (another special tool) and then a snap ring like thing that holds the output shaft in place. Once the snap ring is off, the output shaft will fall out, but then you have to put it all back together. The input shaft has some special tolerences when the pump goes on. I don't know them off hand but I do know there is another special tool to set that gap, as well as the teflon rings on the inputshaft.

I wouldn't do it myself. I always had someone do my stuff that knew a whole lot more about them than I do.

I towed a 2 horse slant trailer probably a dozen times when we first got the truck. After that just my buddies bass boat once.

I don't even have an aftermarket trans cooler on it. Just the bootsy stock unit.

I thought for sure the thing would break long before that so I neglected to put the cooler on it till I got a new trans. Even with the cooler I know it would have went with the turbo.

Not that all trans can go through the abuse I put mine through. I just wanted to let people know that I never had issues with mine. I did have a Yank and a shift kit in it though when I started manually downshifting a lot though. Ohh and I almost never use the trans to engine brake. That is really bad for it I hear.

You don't need to go buy a 65, just have your 60 built to 65 specs, as the only difference between the two are internal changes, so send you 60 to be built to rock solid 65 specs for cheaper than paying for a 65, and having the shaft and tailhousing changed.

I can get a 65 for $500 bux. There's no way I can have my 60 rebuilt for that cheap.

The VHOs have the 65E in them. I'm not sure that will help much, as there are not too many of them around. Then again, if you can find a wrecked one, you may want to get more than the tranny out of it.

I was going to mention the VHO's. I'm not sure if those '65's are the same as the others that are mated to the AWD t-cases... if they are, maybe you could pick up a matching 2wd tailhousing from a dealer?

I know where you can get a built trans for a little more than that. Like new condition.

THe tailhousing and output shaft would be the same as a 60e. They are the same trans, just a different clutch pack in the low gear set and a slightly longer input drum to make room for the 2 extra clutches in the low gear set.

I'm not sure why they are standing up to so much more because it still has the same weak points the 60e does and they haven't been addressed at all.
