Default Help with 2003 Silverado 1500 4.8 vs 5.3

Thinking of purchasing 2003 Silverado 1500 with 4.8 liter engine. Not sure of any issues with engine as far as reliability and performance. Would like to make a decision and let dealer know by tomorrow morning. Thanks.

I would go with the 5.3.

There is no choice. It's a used vehicle. I realize the 5.3 is a better option, but how does the 4.8 stack up, all things considered?

The 4.8 has less power, if you are asking if it will last.....Yes, it is just as "strong" as the 5.3.

I was also in the same position as you. I had the change to buy a Silverado with the 4.8, but I held out and purchased the 5.3. The 4.8 are great motors, however for a stock truck the 5.3 and 4.8 stack up to the horsepower, but not the torque. The 5.3 also responds better to aftermarket bolt ons, making more power.

You could do like so many, they buy the smallest V8 then spend another $1500 trying to make it run as good as the bigger brother.

Another vote for the 5.3. Just make sure you negotiate a good deal.

I was just in the same situation. After driving several of both 4.8L and 5.3L trucks I could hardly tell any differance. The super clean/ good price 2002 Silverado that I ended up with is a 4.8L. I always had the intention of super/turbo charging what ever I got and the limitation at that point would be other parts of the truck (trans), so didn't matter too much to me. 10psi on a 4.8L with good tunning should be about all the trans can handle, that'll do for me.
