i want to start saving up for heads for my truck... one im not sure how much they run for my 01 silverado 4.8 or if they even make performance heads for my truck... two, can i just buy the heads bolt them on and be done with it... and three should i wait and bore my trck like i want to and then buy them, how many cubic inches will i be at if i bored it 30 over...

You can get a set of ported stock heads for your truck like I did, or WCCH is about to offer an Edelbrock head made for the small bore 4.8 and 5.3 motors. I will say this though, a head swap is pretty involved. What other mods do you have? I wouldn't do a head swap as my first mod as there are plenty of other things to do that aren't nearly as invasive.

There are a lot more ways to get you 300 hp that are easier and cheaper than swapping heads. Since you are new to this, I would start with exhaust and CAI intake upgrades, a tuned PCM, e-fans, and similar bolt on mods. Then if you still aren't satisfied you can look into internal upgrades such as cams, valvetrain, and heads.

You'll find that alot of these mods compliment each other, and that some mods don't deliver big gains unless the supporting mods are done along with them. Take your head swap for example, you can install great flowing heads, but if you are still trying to draw air into the engine with a stock intake and push it out through a stock exhaust system you won't really see the full benefit of the heads because you cannot supply them with enough air or get the exhaust out.

Boring 30 over is useless for performance unless your stock pistons/rings are totally shot. For a performance gain, have the block bored to 99mm and get some stock LS1 pistons and you're engine will be a 5.7L!!! Then your head choices are wide open...

that sounds good but wouldnt tht be pretty close to the max, i heard its not good to go to the max... is that all i would need after boring it to 99mm is just the pistons or anything else.

You would need an entire stock LS1 rotating assembly since the 4.8 has a smaller stroke than the rest of the Gen III engines.
